"This stylish pub, whose name reflects the fact that Thomas Paine once called Lewes home, is one of the best places to pair local Harveys ale with well executed food, albeit with a definite Continental lean. Wood panelling, art deco lighting and a summer terrace makes things feel a long way from the average British boozer" - Lonely Planet

BEER

Harveys is still very much a local brewery – Their beers are distributed within around a 50 mile radius and Harveys pursue a policy of local sustainability. The hops come from Sussex, Kent and Surrey and the ‘Spent Hops’ find their way back to the land as fertiliser. Harveys ‘Spent Grains’ are fed to the dairy herd at nearby Plumpton Agricultural College. Spring water for brewing is drawn via an artesian well 60 feet below the premises. This and the yeast strain, used for half a century, combine to produce a range of beers encompassing every style from Porter to Light Milds. The flagship Sussex Best Bitter evolved in the post war period and is Harveys most popular and recognisable ale. It has recently been voted Champion Best Bitter of Britain for two consecutive years.
